The Portugal work visa is called the Residence Visa and is for high skill professionals that will work inside the country for at least one year. It can be renewed in increments of 2 years after the first year. The work visa must apply for from outside the country; as it is not permit to convert immigration status from a business visa (short term); to a long term work visa.
A residence permit must also be obtained at the local town hall; once the assignee has arrived in Portugal with a valid work permit. After 5 years of work with a Residence Visa, a foreign national can apply for permanent residency.
Required Documents for Work Visa :
Along with a completed visa application, the following documents must be submitted for someone to obtain a visa:
- A Visa Application Form
- A valid passport that has a minimum of two blank pages
- A letter of invitation from the employer or other documentation showing the purpose of the trip
- Proof of health insurance and accident insurance
- Proof of sufficient funds to sustain yourself.
- A passport size photo in color
- Your criminal records from your country of residence. If you have lived in another country for more than one year; you have to get criminal records from there as well.
- A document giving permission to the SEF to check your Portuguese criminal records.
- Your employment contract.
- Biometric data such as fingerprints and digital photos for facial recognition
- Documented flight reservations
- If you are already in Portugal: Proof of legal entry into Portuguese territories, such as a visa.
- Proof of your qualifications for the job.
- Proof of accommodation in Portugal, such as an address of residence or a hotel reservation
- If you are applying from a country other than that of your origin; Proof of legal stays, such as a residence permit or a visa.
Work permit Application Documents :

A visa will grant entrance to Portugal. There’s a separate process for obtaining a permit to work. To apply for a work permit or Autorização de Trabalho, employees will need to provide the following documents:
- A valid Portuguese residence visa
- Proof of accommodation in Portugal
- A valid passport
- Two passport photos in color
- Pertinent tax documents
- Background checks for criminal record
- An employment contract
- Proof of registration with Social Security
Document Guidelines:
- All the documents you submit have to be in English or Portuguese. If they are not, you must have them translated by a certified translator and then notarized.
- Certain documents, such as diplomas or civil documents, may have to legalize. You can legalize documents through an Apostille Stamp or through the Portuguese Embassy in your country.
