The Portugal work visa is called the Residence Visa and is for highly skilled professionals that will work inside the country for at least one year. It can be renewed in increments of 2 years after the first year. The work visa must be applied for from outside the country as it is not permitted to convert immigration status from a business visa (short term) to a long-term work visa.

A residence permit must also be obtained at the local town hall once the assignee has arrived in Portugal with a valid work permit. After 5 years of work with a Residence Visa, a foreign national can apply for permanent residency.

Once you have secured a job offer, the application for the Portugal work visa is divided into three parts:

1. Your employer applies for the Work Permit.
They must do this after they have offered the job to you but before you travel to Portugal.
2. You apply for a Work Visa at the Portuguese Embassy.
Once you have a Work Permit, you must apply for a work visa at the Portugal Embassy, which you will use to enter the country.
3. You apply for a Portugal Residence Permit.
Once you have arrived in Portugal, you must apply for your Residence Permit for Work at the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF). This is what allows you to live in Portugal long-term

The immigration law, as Article 89 and paragraph 2 also introduced on 4th July 2007 and Amendment 2012 and 2017. Temporary Resident permits for self-employment purposes shall only be granted to third country nationals. Who has a legal identity or freelancer professional’s employment relation in Portugal or independent professional activity national territory; and are registered in the Social Security System for at least 12 months in Portugal.

The expression of interest is preferably submitted through the electronic platform (SAPA Portal). And the application is submitted personally on a standard form signed by the applicant or his/her legal representative; and may be submitted at any SEF’s directorate or regional delegation. Which, after proceedings and decision, will forward it to the directorate or regional delegation of the applicant’s area of temporary resident permit.
